Hey all you hungry kick ass designers. The series of skypes and lectures is going to kick off this FRIDAY MARCH 5th in the EMERITUS ROOM with ELLIOTT EARLS. It should be an interesting session. I hope you have taken some time to endulge yourselves with Elliott's work.

Elliott will start us off at 12pm with a short presentation. After that will be time for some question answer time. There are a couple of questions that have been planned to kick off the Q and A. And after that its up to you to ask Elliott any questions or comments you might have for him. And please do, dont feel nervous. All of us will figure out how things go with group skype sessions the more we do it.

Elliott Earls was appointed Designer-in-Residence and Head of the 2-D Design
Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2001. Earls formed The Apollo Pro-
gram in 1993, whose commercial clients include Elektra Entertainment, Nonesuch
Records, Little Brown & Co., Scribner Publishing Co., Elemond Casabella (Italy),
The Cartoon Network (U.K.), Polygram Classics and Jazz, The Voyager Compa-
ny and Janus Films. Earls‘s work has been featured in the books: The Graphic
Edge, Cool Type, Faces on the Edge, Type in the Digital Age, One and Two Color
Graphics, and Cutting Edge Typography,. Earls also has been a visiting artist at
numerous American universities and presented workshops on design, culture and
new media in Europe and America, and worked at Fabrica before taking the role as design chiar at Cranbrook.

Elliot Earls will be skyping with us on Friday March 5th at noon.

Design Club Spring Semester

Hi guys! Thanks to everyone that came to the design club meeting yesterday! Here's a recap of what we talked about:

1) Sounds like people are interested in meeting more regularly, so we are going to plan on meeting every other Tuesday at noon in the student center. So our next meeting will be on February 9th at noon.

2) We have a BIG event planned for March 19th with AIGA. It is an intercollegiate event called PIVOT and MCAD is the first school to host it! We will be inviting other students from schools throughout Minnesota. Great chance to meet the competition and create contacts. If you are interested in helping to plan this, please contact Jenny or myself.

3) February 4th, is the next Cocktails with Creatives. This is a great event held every month that allows different designers, students, copywriters, ect to get together and network. It will be held at the American Swedish Institute, for their new, all female, Swedish design exhibit, "17 Designers". The exhibit is free this night, and the first 200 drinks are free - so come early! We are thinking of carpooling to this, so let us know if you want to go! Also, some students from the Missouri AIGA group will be meeting up with us there to hang out and see what design students in Minnesota do.

4) Just a reminder that Design club has a blog! http://mcaddesignclub.blogspot.com/ If you have any interesting design news and want to start posting, let Jenny and I know so we can make you an author.

5) We also talked about possibly having a weekend trip sometime this semester to the Hamilton Woodtype Museum.

6) AIGA MEMBERSHIPS UPDATES: As far as I know, they are still working on them. I emailed the director last week and he said they were just swamped over the holidays. They should be finishing them anytime now. You can help speed up the process by creating an account. I already emailed the information, but some of you have not done this yet. Please do it asap. It takes less than 5 minutes and will help you get your membership faster.

Create an account on http://www.my.aiga.org/vango/core/createaccount.aspx This first asks for your email, name, and zip code. Then it will ask for a billing address... but this does NOT make you pay again. It is just the address that will send you mail in the future, or if you sign up for future events. After you do this you will get a confirmation email with a username and password. With this info you can update your member profile, change your address, ect.

2)Create Don't Hate A mentorship program with students from Washburn Highschool. Starts in January. Every Tuesday 8:30-9:30 for about 9 weeks.  This is a program where college students are the mentors and the high school students are the mentees.  It is sponsored by Adobe and World Studio.  In these 9 weeks, mentors will guide the students in creating a billboard based on the idea of tolerance.  There will be midway and a final critique by design professionals.  Then at the end, a winning billboard will be chosen... and will actually be hung up in Minneapolis.   If you are interested in helping out with this or being a mentor, email me and I can set you up with all the information.

One Good Chair

Sometimes it's nice to look to other design fields for some inspiration... Currently and organization called One Good Chair is finishing up their 2009 chair designing competition. Check out their website to see the other competing designs!

Details for competition criteria:

"The focus of the competition is the lounge chair or similar casual seating—simple objects to assist the body in repose. Commercial office chairs and other specialized functions are not appropriate, but otherwise you have as much latitude as you can explain and illustrate in a convincing way. Outdoor and public furniture are especially encouraged. Entries are restricted to original concepts that have not been built. Commercially sold products are prohibited.

In addition to the special criteria of the “Fit Right Here” challenge, entries should demonstrate the three basic principles of “One Good Chair”:

Make good (Material conservation). How can shape optimize resources in design, fabrication, and shipping? What forms create little waste but lots of taste?
Feel good (Physical comfort). How can shape aid the body in the act of sitting? How do different people sit? How might they?
Look good (Emotional resonance). What kinds of images create emotional bond between viewer and product? What is the intersection of sustainability and sensuality?"

The Week in Type

It’s been a little while since the last week in type. I have so many links, so many new releases, so much news to share, I wonder where I should begin. I know, let’s start with a great site based on a very simple idea -Typedia is an encyclopedia of fonts, or in the words of its creator, a mix between IMDb and Wikipedia, but just for type. It’s not that the information is not out there; it is, but where this site, the brainchild of Jason Santa Maria and co., succeeds is in putting that information all under one roof, so to speak. My favourite feature is the Good Deeds page, which makes it really easy to contribute.

Two typographers (Pierre & Damien) and a professional driver (Stef van Campenhoudt) collaborated to design a font using a car as the drawing instrument. The car's movements were tracked using custom software by interactive artist Zachary Lieberman.

Peter Seitz: Designing a Life

Just wanted to spread the word about the book of the life and work of graphic designer Peter Seitz! Designed by MCAD-alum Ryan Nelson and published by MCAD in 2007 (with support from the Walker Art Center and AIGA Minnesota), this book is a must-read for understanding a key figure in the design history of MCAD and Minneapolis. More background information on the project can be found here.

Peter Seitz (1931-Present) is a legendary graphic designer, author, teacher and business owner who served as the first Design Director at The Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, MN), helped establish the graphic design curriculum at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and took out the very first listing as a Graphic Designer in the Twin Cities Yellow Pages. His life and work is chronicled in "Peter Seitz: Designing A Life" (published by MCAD, 2007, ISBN-10: 0980089301).

Seitz followed the road less traveled in all aspects of his career, starting things rather than joining them. He began his design studies at the Ulm School of Design (a Bahaus offshoot) in Germany, studying with celebrated graphic designers Tomás Moldonado, Max Bill, and Otl Aicher. He received a Master’s of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design and Photography from Yale University in 1961, studying with Paul Rand, Bradbury Thompson and Herbert Matter.

Upon moving to Minneapolis in 1964, Seitz became the first Director of Design at the Walker Art Center, where he created pioneering exhibitions as well as the groundbreaking journal Design Quarterly. Seitz went on to organize the Minnesota Chapter of AIGA, Siggraph, and the country’s first interdisciplinary design firm, InterDesign— producing the identity programs and signage systems for the Minneapolis Parkways, the downtown St. Paul Skyways, the Minnesota State Capital and the Minnesota Zoological Gardens. From business, Seitz moved into education, serving at various times as the Chair of Design at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design from 1971 until 1998.

Hey Everyone,

This is just a quick email to update everyone with some design club happenings for the next few weeks.

1)TOMORROW at noon there will be students visiting from Kansas City in the student center. They would love to talk with some MCAD students during lunch and do a show-n-tell of design (either stuff you've made or stuff you just think is awesome). The Design Department is providing pizza to students interested in joining the conversation. If you are interested, meet at the round table in the student center at noon tomorrow. If you would like to share a design project feel free to bring that with as well. This is a good opportunity to see what other design students are doing
outside of Minnesota.

2) Tuesday March 24th (next week) at 5:00 design club will be hosting an ice cream social in the student center before the Experimental Jetset Lecture. We have also invited design students from other schools in Minneapolis to stop by and get to know us at MCAD better. Free ice cream, maybe some typographic pictionary games, hmmmmm we are also working on trying to stream the lecture in the student center for those who weren't able to buy tickets. stay tuned for details...

Having your work recognized and awarded in National design competitions is a very effective and hassle free method of self-promotion. If you haven't ever entered any, I highly encourage you to!

The entry deadlines for the 365: AIGA Annual Design Competition and the 50 Books/50 Covers of 2008 design competition are here. The deadline for both is this Friday, March 6. If you cannot make it by this Friday, check the site next week to see if they've extended the deadline. (Very often the case for design competitions)

Feel free to contact me if you'd like help getting your materials prepared or have any questions about the entry forms. Again, the Design Department will reimburse you for you entry fee if you submit an invoice to the Design Chair. (Wow, thanks MCAD!)

Next Monday, March 9th at 12pm sharp in the College Center, 3 local representatives from AIGA will be visiting MCAD to discuss the benefits of a student AIGA membership. (Benefit #1: If we get a group of 20 students to join, you'll get a discounted membership rate.)

The Design Club has graciously agreed to use the first 30 minutes of their meeting time for this presentation. We'll be meeting in the curtained room of the College Center. So if you've been on the fence about joining AIGA or renewing your membership, or have no idea what AIGA has to do with you and you mad skills, here's your chance to get as much first hand info as possible. They have a short presentation prepared for us, to be followed by a Q&A session. So come prepared with questions for them!

The AIGA Design Show competition and exhibition! A juried competition of regional print and interactive
design whose chosen works will be included in an exhibition at the Wiesman Art Museum in March. A cool opportunity to be sure, but the deadline is this Friday at 5pm-gulp! Check out the entry guidelines and details here.

If you're interested and think you can whip up entry materials by Friday AM, the MCAD Design Department will reimburse you for the entry fee (you just need to submit a receipt to Tom G). I am happy to help you guys organize your entries and coordinate getting them submitted to AIGA Friday. After you've reviewed all the info, just contact me via MCAD email asap if you're interested so we can collectively hustle this together.

If you can't make this one, there are other AIGA design competitions coming up: 365: AIGA Annual Design Competitions 30 and 50 Books/50 Covers of 2008 competition. The deadline for both of those is March 6.

Get up, stand up!

The student voice is and should be the most powerful tool for change we have here at MCAD, but unfortunately it's often a very quiet and underrepresented one. We all know times are tough right now, and MCAD is no exception to the substantial loss of endowments, decrease in enrollment, lay-offs, and demotions that are rampant in higher education. With the MCAD Presidential search AND the Design Dept. Chair Search currently in full swing, it's the perfect time for you guys to get involved in what's going on here at MCAD.

Next week is jam packed with such opportunities. I highly encourage you all to attend all the meetings below. Get informed, voice your hopes and concerns, and come armed with challenging questions for the authority that has such influence on your MCAD community and culture! Not just for your own sake, but for the students who succeed you.

Yes... Design Club is still on!! Sorry for the delays! The meetings will be on Mondays at noon at the big round table in the college center. Hopefully this works out for most of you.

Submit some work, Or just critique what is up there. Either way, its interesting to see what people can do with one word.

Screenprinting in the Printshop on Sunday went super well! Thanks to those who came, and many thanks to Sami, Elliot, & Max for keeping things organized.

REMEMBER, we have the Printshop reserved from Noon - 4pm on the upcoming two Sundays as well. So stop on by, bring your wrapping paper pattern (designed at 18 inches x 18 inches), and get printing! If you haven't been super involved with Design Club thus far, no worries! Better late than never. We'd love to see you there!

Dirt Cheap KIP films for DC's Art Sale fodder

I spoke with Tyler about the possibility of Design Club receiving super discounted vellum KIP printouts for the Art Sale screen-printed wrapping paper project. (For the positive films to burn screens from) And he said " hell's yeah!"
But not knowing exactly how many we'll need in advance, he wasn't able to commit to doing them for free. But keep your fingers crossed on that...

This is how he'd like it to all go down:
~ On the 3 Sundays you'll be printing, tell the SB what your KIP printouts are for and you won't be charged for them. Tyler will alert the SB ahead of time that we'll be swarming them with KIP vellum requests.
~ DC needs to keep track of how many KIP printouts we output, then we need get the final tally to Tyler. (Perhaps Sami, Elliot, and Max can oversee this)
~ Tyler will then determine the final discount, and "invoice" DC a total.

If anyone has questions/concerns about this process, let's discuss them further at the next meeting.

Plans for our Design Club project of the semester are underway! We have grand hopes of screenprinting wrapping paper patterns to sell at the 2008 MCAD Art Sale. The plan is for each Design Club member to design his/her own pattern (one or two colors) and attend a DESIGN CLUB DAY in the print shop (Oct/Nov) where we will help each other screenprint. The sheets of wrapping paper will be sold in variety packs at the Art Sale.

And if there's time, we'll also screenprint GIFT BAGS and GIFT TAGS.

Beautiful Losers is a documentary film celebrating a loose-knit group of American artists—Shepard Fairey, Ed Templeton, Margaret Kilgallen, Barry McGee, Mike Mills, Jo Jackson, Chris Johanson, Thomas Campbell, Harmony Korine, Stephen Powers, and Geoff McFetridge—who emerged from the 1990s underground youth subcultures of skateboarding, graffiti, punk rock, and hip-hop. Heather Olson, the director of all the AIGA Minnesota student chapters, will be at Design Club tonight to speak about how the AIGA can benefit students now + beyond college. If you're considering becoming an AIGA member but want to learn more, this is the perfect opportunity for you--- come to the Emeritus Room at 6pm on Tuesday. You may bring the $50 membership check to this meeting or stop by the student center TOMORROW between noon and 12:45pm to give me your check (checks should be made out to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design).

In addition to this already reduced rate $50 membership rate, our Design Department is going to help offset the membership cost and chip in an additional $20, bringing the membership fee down to only $30 (the $20 savings will be given to you in the form of a 'rebate' check from MCAD a few weeks from now in March).

DeProgram this summer will be from July 6 - 26, 2008. Cost this year will be $3,950.00 excluding airfare. Outside of the three weeks in Holland you will also spend four days in Zurich.

The program cost covers hotel, all travel in Europe, some meals, all fees related to events, and graduate or undergraduate tuition for three credits.

You are responsible for airfare to and from Europe.

Hey everyone—

I don't know if anyone will have or has been checking this here blog during our illustrious holiday vay-cay, but this post is interestingly important. Or importantly interesting. Or industriously impotent.

HERE GOES: I am now the design rep for SAC, following in our NYC dwelling best bud Kevin Wade Shaw(shank Redemption)'s eco-friendly footsteps. I am going to be having a meeting with Tom Garret at the beginning of this next semester about what the design department town hall meeting should be like/what things should be discussed. Democracy reigns! I don't know what all to discuss (I have a few ideas, but I am primarily a blank slate when it comes to this stuff) and I am now turning to you, fellow designers, to tell me what things would be best for our town hall meeting and further things that will be of help to the design department. I urge everyone to leave comments on here, or, if you feel better about it, hit me up at dlathrop@mcad.edu. This semester can totes be a big bang if we but in our collective mind hustle and forge new ideas! Paths to excellence! Bringing it on! Spread the word to comic, ad, and illustration majors as well, and together we will be most awesome.

I've really been admiring the work of the Paris-based design studio wa75 since I stumbled across their website the other week.

Laurent Meszaros of wa75 had some really great things to say in response to an email I sent to him (+ other designers) asking about the influence of the Bauhaus on his work. He brought up an interesting point about graphic design in France that I hadn't thought about before:

"...in France, the terms 'design' or 'designer' doesn't apply to graphic designers. We are bound to the whole history of painting, carving, printing, etc. We are supposed to be artists that have failed… (creepy isn't it ?). Graphic design (in France) doesn't have the same history as in Germany, England or Netherlands, and of course in America."

Design professor Steven McCarthy will give an illustrated presentation on works from the Goldstein Museum's graphic design collection. Centered around the concept of design authorship—where designers' roles are expanded from professional service providers to socially, culturally and politically engaged communication initiators—the collection spans 70 years of innovation.

ONLY 2 BOOKS OUT OF THE 100 ARRIVED ON MY DOORSTEP TODAY. Extreme sadness? I talked it up with "Roz L" on Lulu's "live chat" feature to find out what the deal is.

me: Does this mean that the books have not yet been printed?

me: Or have the 100 books been lost in transit?

Roz L: I'm not sure on that,it will be checked by our print support
and someone will get back to you within 2 business days

me: I'm very disappointed and I would feel uncomfortable printing through Lulu in the future. My business had a deadline to meet, and the estimated arrival time for these books was last week.

Roz L: I apologize for that but this problem happen very rarely, we'll
have someone checked on it as soon as possible

... ?

Okay, Roz. Well I will surely keep everyone updated on the order's status. But it looks like we won't have them in time for the Art Sale, saddddd.
